  • Grieg & Vaular
    Bergen
    09.06.2026 - 10.06.2026

    Closing concert: Grieg & Vaular

Bergen legends in Grieghallen. One of Norway’s most distinctive voices in contemporary hip-hop, Lars Vaular, captures the present with both vulnerability and precision in his writing. Since his solo debut nearly twenty years ago, his poetic universe helped define a whole era in Norwegian music – while continually moving beyond it. Lars Vaular is not only a rapper. He is a cultural presence in his own right. Now he takes on his largest performance with a symphony orchestra to date. The programme spans music from across his career, alongside something entirely new. Kjetil Møster and Ole Morten Vågan have arranged the music for the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. – They take care of the things that matter to me. It’s a blessing to play with a full band and the orchestra. The stories in the lyrics come through clearly, and at times it feels as if we’re creating small theatre scenes on stage, says Vaular. Just like Vaular, Edvard Grieg combined artistic virtuosity with broad appeal. In his own era, he was the world’s best-selling recording artist. He composed his Piano Concerto in A minor at the age of 25, and the work became his major international breakthrough. This year’s soloist in the concerto is Yulianna Avdeeva, a pianist celebrated for her passion, technical command and striking spontaneity. The finale of the 2026 Festival brings together this year’s festival musicians in the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, led by Bjarni Frímann Bjarnason, Artistic Director of the BIT20 Ensemble. Bjarnason has conducted Björk’s world tour, collaborated with Ólafur Arnalds, and is known for his boundless creativity. – Grieg created something in his time, and I create something in my era. Hopefully it will inspire someone else in the future, says Lars Vaular. Top image: Edvard Grieg (photo: Axel Leverin) og Lars Vaular (photo: Shawn Arvind)

Summer Festival 2026 @ Happy Rock Shows

Welcome to Happy Rock Show's annual summer festival. As usual, there will be opportunities for grilling from our large grill, so feel free to bring your own barbecue food when you come. The grill is ready for grilling from 6 pm. We have 3 artists/bands on our outdoor stage. We are incredibly proud to present our line-up for this year's summer festival. We have never had two headliners before but it is happening this year. Finally we get a visit from our big pop and rock favorite ØYVIND HOLM. In our opinion, a world-class song writer, right up there with The Beatles. You don't want to miss this. ØYVIND HOLM has been an active and extremely productive songwriter in Norwegian music for what seems like a lifetime. He started Dipsomaniacs in 1997, and many also know him as a songwriter and vocalist in the Americana band Sugarfoot, who toured with The Waterboys in England and Sweden last year. In parallel, Holm has released a number of albums under his own name. Most recently, in December, the critically acclaimed Blue Is the Color of My Soul Light was released – his fourth solo release since 2020. Here he delivers energetic and melodic pop with roots in 60s psychedelia and 90s lo-fi. The press has praised Paradox of Laughing as "fresh and strong pop music that stands on the shoulders of a rich musical history" (Popklikk), and referred to Holm as "a true pop artist" (Adresseavisen). RONNY MOB: After just over a year since they last visited us, the number 1 boss punk in Norway is ready for us again! This time it will be at our annual summer festival, and with a new album in the bag, this will be an experience you don't want to miss. From no man's land, 36-year-old tinsmith Ronny Pøbel suddenly appeared in Oslo's rock scene in 2005. Ronny Pøbel immediately made a name for himself and attracted attention by naming himself "Society Hater No. 1", with the slogan and motto "Føkk Døkk". With the help of his good friends in the Backstreet Girls, Ronny was given the opportunity to realize his dream of starting his own band where he could roar, scream and vent all his frustration and anger. After that, things have moved quickly. Lyrics and melodies that Ronny had been laying around for years were finished with help from Petter Baarli and Dan Thunderbird. After much ups and downs, with x number of dissolutions and expulsions of band members, this is the new band in RONNY PØBEL. Vocals. Ronny Pøbel Bass.Tore fuck Guitar.Dennis Hagen Drums. Svenn Olav Skulbørstad STARFLWR: Starflwr refines the cross between 90s indie rock and classic Americana. The result is an airy and atmospheric soundscape, spiced with enough nerve that it never gets too pretty. Focusing on strong melodic lines and an organic flow, the band creates music that feels both intimate and spacious. It's the sound of modern melancholy wrapped in a timeless rock expression. Genre: Atmospheric Indie Rock Vibe: Dreamy and melody-driven. Core sound: Guitar, keyboards, airy vocals and a down-to-earth rhythm section.

    One Ocean

Great music from small islands. Small Island Big Song is a music, film, and performing arts project that brings together acclaimed Indigenous artists from across the Pacific and Indian Oceans on a shared stage. These musicians are connected by an oceanic ancestry and a deep commitment to climate justice. One Ocean is the latest live performance to emerge from this evolving body of work, coming to Bergen in a concert version. The music weaves together diverse traditional soundscapes, shaped by contemporary perspectives. Film footage, shot locally within the natural environments of each island, evolves organically through the artists’ individual contributions. Together, sound and image create vivid impressions of the artists’ home islands, forming a powerful scenic presence on stage. The company includes artists from Madagascar, Taiwan, Rapa Nui, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Australia, and beyond. Across these island nations, communities and ecosystems are already experiencing the tangible impacts of the climate crisis. Through Small Island Big Song, the artists give voice to these environments – through their languages, instruments, and their embodied living heritage. The project has resulted in two albums, a feature-length documentary film, an education programme, and multiple concert productions. Photo: Bon Wu

    Benedicte Maurseth

Spontaneous composition at Troldhaugen. Kode Bergen Art Museum’s Composer in Residence for 2026 is Benedicte Maurseth. The acclaimed folk musician is known for her work with the genre’s music heritage. This year, her compositions will be central in Kode’s programme, including this Festival concert in Troldsalen, overlooking Edvard Grieg’s composer hut. Maurseth released the album Mirra last year, an album featuring sound recordings of wild reindeer, wolverine, snowy owl and Arctic fox from the Hardangervidda plateau, combined with improvisations on fiddle and piano, as well as electronics and percussion. The album was included in The Guardian’s top ten list of folk music albums. Last year, the work Elja had its world premiere, performed by Benedicte Maurseth and the Kronos Quartet, who were featured as Festival musicians in 2022. Elja was written by Maurseth and Kristine Tjøgersen, and its premiere at Carnegie Hall brought international attention to Hardanger fiddles, as well as the Hardanger viola and cello made by Ottar Kåsa, who is also featured at the Festival this year with the work Istem. During her year as Composer in Residence, Maurseth will approach music through the theme of 'brådiktning' – music in the moment. This Festival concert will be an opportunity to get to know Maurseth’s work, with a programme that includes 'brådiktning', newly composed music as well as variations on older traditional tunes. Record screening in the Planetarium - 24 Variations for Piano in Dolby Atmos

Experience Håkon Skogstad's latest album 24 Variations for Piano on the album release date on June 5th at the Planetarium (located in the Science Center, Trondheim). The album was recorded in Dolby Atmos surround sound through Øra Studio and here is a unique opportunity to experience the music in a sound system with 38 speakers placed around you on several levels. The system is the first of its kind in Norway and one of only six in the world. Here you get 24 original compositions in 24 keys during a 360-degree journey through the solar system in comfortable cinema seats. About the work: 24 Variations for Piano opens with an introductory main theme that can be described as a kind of “minimalist arietta”. The theme consists of 14 bars divided between the A and B parts of the main theme, and moves between C major and A minor – the latter of which is first clearly established in Variation No. 1. The theme is both tonally and stylistically flexible, and invites a wide range of musical genres. From this sense of unresolved openness, the listener is led through a journey via 24 strongly contrasting musical expressions in 24 different keys. Each movement is a variation on one or more of the small motifs that make up the main theme – sometimes clearly recognizable on the surface, other times hidden deeper in the texture, rhythmically or harmonically transformed. Stylistically, the work draws inspiration from a wide range of musical styles and composers, including Chopin, Rachmaninov, JS Bach, Prokofiev, Debussy, Ravel, Grieg and Piazzolla, as well as more recent figures such as Horacio Salgán and Juan José Mosalini. As a cyclical composition, the work is also related to works such as Bach's Goldberg Variations, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition and the Chopin Preludes. The order of the 24 movements follows neither the circle of fifths nor a chromatic system, but is instead shaped by the dramaturgy of the music, where each “musical image” contrasts the one before it. Each movement can thus stand alone as a miniature, or be experienced as part of a larger cyclical whole – a musical journey where the final movement returns to the main theme of the opening, and A minor transforms into A major.

    Dido & Aeneas

Witches, sailors and a doomed diplomatic marriage. In 1689, Henry Purcell unveiled what some consider the first ‘operatic’ work created in England – a musical telling of the Queen of Carthage, Dido, and her swift, ill-fated romance with a Trojan prince, Aeneas. Dido & Aeneas isn’t just England’s first opera – it would also become one of England’s most popular operas. The appeal is easily explained. Dido contains all of what made Purcell, by the turn of the 18th century, the greatest composer England had ever produced – notably his startling gift for the sort of dramatic, moving music that brought the theatrical stage to life. In this performance, England’s most respected choir and orchestra for baroque music comes to Bergen with conductor Jonathan Sells. Their performance of this vivid and deeply moving work will surely prove as authoritative as it will moving. The concert will also incorporate Purcell’s Funeral Sentences, written for the funeral of Queen Mary II in 1965. Both entertainment and psychological tragedy, Dido has everything – from choruses of cackling witches and swaggering sailors to music of the most tender, pained beauty. The most famous example of the latter comes in the Queen’s famous ‘Lament’ – a song of grief to whose aching none-bar melody her soul ascends with unmatched poignancy. Image on top: Monteverdi Choir. Night Jazz

Nattjazz (Nightjazz) is the longest jazz festival in Northern Europe and is arranged annually in late May / early June in Bergen. Nattjazz was founded in 1972 and is despite its age, now stronger than ever. Every year approximately 80 concerts are presented throughout the festival period. The main festival area is an old sardine factory, USF Verftet (United Sardines Factory), which now contains several concert venues plus exhibitions, theatre, cinema and artist studios. The music profile of Nattjazz spans through a wide range of styles, with a main focus on modern jazz. During Nattjazz the borderlines between jazz, rock, ethno and electronica are explored and often wiped out. The children also get their share!

New Hardanger instruments navigate folk and chamber music. The traditional Norwegian Hardanger fiddle is an iconic instrument, but have you heard of the Hardanger viola and the Hardanger cello? These new instruments were created by musician and instrument maker Ottar Kåsa, and they carry the distinctive Hardanger fiddle sound, with sympathetic strings, transferred to the viola and cello. Like the instruments themselves, the quartet’s music harnesses both the historical and the new. ‘The music is newly composed, interspersed with arrangements of traditional Hardanger fiddle tunes, and navigates the boundaries between folk music and chamber music,’ says Vegar Vårdal, who is the main composer of the work Istem. Folk songs, bridal marches, and lyre tunes combine lyrical beauty with rhythmic appeal, exploring the possibilities of these unique instruments. The quartet consists of Sivert Holmen and Vegar Vårdal on Hardanger fiddles, Nora Taksdal on Hardanger viola, and Johannes Martens on Hardanger cello. Instrument maker and Hardanger fiddle player Ottar Kåsa appears as a soloist. Image: iStem. Photo: Knut Utler.

Music runs in the veins. At times, it seems as if all the musicality for miles gathers within a single family. That is the case for the Kanneh-Mason family from Nottingham, England. Seven siblings, all musicians at a high level. The Bergen International Festival has previously welcomed both cellist Sheku and pianist Isata, and like her siblings, Jeneba has played since early childhood. ‘She plays with power and authority. No one could have delivered Price’s work more convincingly,’ wrote The Guardian when 20-year-old Jeneba made her solo debut at the BBC Proms in the Royal Albert Hall. Together with Chineke! Orchestra, she performed a piano concerto by Florence Price (1887–1953), the first African-American woman to have her music performed by major symphony orchestras. In 2022 Jeneba Kanneh-Mason was named a Classic FM Rising Star, and in 2024 she returned to the Royal Albert Hall with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. Her playing style is described as poetic and confident, with emotional depth. Like the rest of her family, Jeneba is dedicated to bringing music to light that is not widely known. In Håkonshallen she performs works by Price and William Grant Still, alongside classics by Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Chopin. Image above: Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, photo by Johanna Berghorn.

    Opera Café: Woman and Comrade

Siv Trine Haldaas, screenwriter, composer and performer, presents a taste of a brand new work that is in progress. The musical theatre Woman and Comrade (with lyrics/music by Siv Trine Haldaas,) is a portrait of Augusta Aasen (1878-1920) from Osen, one of the country's early champions of labor politics and women's issues. Cast: Siv Trine Haldaas composer/mezzo-soprano/actress, Alex Robson, violin/primarius, Anders Larsen, violin, Ole Wuttudal, viola, Karoline Brevik, cello. The script is based on Arild Bye's biography Augusta Aasen – Viljen. Striden. Reisen. En livshistorie 1878-1920 (Foreningen Gamle Steinkjer, 2020). The music, performed by a string quartet and mezzo-soprano, is part of the story as a co-star, closely woven with the text. It outlines both the emotional undertones of the story and the dramatic ones, with references to the political currents that formed the backdrop for Augusta Aasen's lifelong dedication. Organized by the Norwegian Opera Friends Association and Skeive Stemmer Operakompani. The concert series is supported by the Norwegian Directorate of Culture and Sparebank1 smsn Operakafé presents curated quality concerts in informal settings, where the audience gets up close to outstanding opera singers. We challenge both the audience and performers with a varied program and highlight queer, unique and marginalized voices. In this way, we create a low-threshold meeting place that contributes to dialogue, knowledge and interest in opera, and that reaches a wide audience. In collaboration with Skeive Stemmer, we provide space and work for queer artists and stories. Queer performers and audiences have long been part of the opera community, and we want to give space to stories that reflect their experiences. The audience gains insight into the music and the singer's artistry through personal anecdotes and historical perspectives. Operakafé has developed into an arena for artistic collaborations across genres, without hierarchy and status quo. We want to reflect the diversity of society, and the audience today ranges from 18 to 90 years old. Generational meetings and meetings across culture and identity have become a natural part of our expression.

    Mahler 2

An epic contemplation of life and death. Gustav Mahler’s assertion that ‘a symphony must contain the world’ is vindicated spectacularly by the composer’s Symphony No 2, the Resurrection Symphony. In this epic piece for a huge orchestra, two soloists and massed voices, Mahler does nothing less than create a sweeping expression of the human experience in musical form. From its opening funeral march to its final ecstatic hymn of faith in the afterlife – taking in an Austrian ländler, a klezmer clarinet and far more in between – this is a work that pushes musicians to their limits in its conjuring of terror, triumph, grief and comfort. Artist-in-Residence Esa-Pekka Salonen, a musician of colossal experience, conducts the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and star soloists and choirs in this performance of Mahler’s perhaps most captivating and moving symphony. When Salonen conducted the same work as his farewell concerts at the San Francisco Symphony in 2025, the press described the results as ‘staggering’, ‘ferocious’ and ‘exalted’. An orchestra that has never been on better form, a conductor known for his thrilling and new-minted interpretations, and Mahler’s inspiring hymn to the resilience of the human spirit – these performances in Grieghallen promises to be overwhelming live music experiences for everyone involved. Monteverdis madrigaler

Monteverdi’s beguiling songs of life and love. In the early 1600s, Claudio Monteverdi altered the course of music history by rethinking the relationship between words and music. In his madrigals – secular songs of love and loss for combined voices – he let his music be controlled completely by text, to be filled with its clarity, shaped by its consonants and syllables and infused with its emotional depth. The result is a collection of ‘inexhaustibly beguiling masterpieces’ (The Guardian) – visceral and sensual works whose stories still feel powerful, truthful and relevant today. No ensemble on earth has a closer relationship to Monteverdi’s madrigals than Concerto Italiano, who with conductor Rinaldo Alessandrini have recently completed a 28-year project to record the works in their entirety. Gramophone magazine described the results as ‘riveting and incredibly stylish’. Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano come to Bergen for a performance of highlights from Monteverdi’s madrigal output at Håkonshallen. This is music of deep intimacy and high expression that delights in the sound and style of the Italian language as much as it plumbs the depths of human emotion. Image on top: Rinaldo Alessandrini. Randem trained at the Norwegian National Academy of Opera and the Barratt Due Institute of Music, and in 2017 she was accepted into the prestigious studio program at Staatsoper Unter den Linden, where she has also performed several major leading roles.
